Amanah backs Dr Mahathir’s call for institutional reforms, discard party interests

Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) vice-president Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa has taken up Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's call for all parties to unite in changing the country's leadership and pursue institutional reforms. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and other critics of Datuk Seri Najib Razak within Umno should work together with Pakatan Harapan to save the country, said Mujahid. "I support Dr Mahathir's call for everyone to temporarily set aside party and group interests to focus on questioning the prime minister's leadership," said Mujahid in a statement today. "I urge Tan Sri Muhyiddin, the former deputy prime minister, and other Umno leaders to have the courage to take up Dr Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan's call to bring about immediate change." Mujahid said the power to remove the prime minister, who is also Umno president, rested with Umno division leaders. "Hence, I urge Umno division leaders to prioritise the country's interests and reject the prime minister's failures and be brave for the sake of the truth." But Mujahid added it was not just a matter of removing the prime minister, but introducing structural reforms in the country, such as freedom of expression and clean elections. Yesterday, PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said he supported Muhyiddin's call for institutional reforms, adding that it was in line with the opposition's stance. PKR vice-president and secretary-general Rafizi Ramli also offered a hand of friendship to anyone and everyone who subscribed to the reform agenda. Muhyiddin, who was suspended from Umno on Friday, said he would continue to speak out and urged people to go beyond removing Najib to pursuing institutional reforms. He also called for institutional change to limit the powers of the prime minister over government institutions. – February 28, 2016.]]>
