Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said is the latest in the chorus calling for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to step down from his deputy president post over his attacks against Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The Umno Supreme Council member said alternatively, Muhyiddin could contest for the party presidency in the next election. "Tan Sri Muhyiddin must remember that he became Pagoh MP on a Barisan Nasional ticket and it was BN machinery that helped him to this day," she said in a statement today. She said Muhyiddin as the party number two should be working to smoothen the president's work, and differences in views should be properly channelled. "His actions give a bad example to grassroots leaders. "If he truly cannot agree with what Umno has practised all this time, he should step away or contest for presidency in the next party election," she said. On Monday, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz reportedly said Muhyiddin should resign as party deputy president if he could no longer assist the president as outlined in the party constitution. "It is an offence if the deputy president performs any act in contrary to his duties," said Nazri, who is minister of tourism and culture. Another Umno Supreme Council member, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, said Nazri's remark was a reminder to all party members, not just Muhyiddin. "I believe we have our methods... for example, if there are differences in political views, Tan Sri Muhyiddin, as deputy president could voice his views in the Umno Supreme Council meetings which he attends. "Rightly, a spirit achieved during the last Umno Supreme Council, whereby the president (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) opted to be big-hearted and embraced and shook hand with Muhyiddin, and reciprocated by the latter, should be appreciated. Whatever differences must be solved inside the party not outside," he said. – February 24, 2016.]]>
