In conjunction with Datuk Seri Najib Razak's 40th anniversary in politics, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says he is hopeful that the prime minister will change his ways and emulate his father, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein. The former prime minister said previously, he had high hopes for Najib but was disappointed lately due to his dismal performance. "I used to have very high hopes for the prime minister. He was the son of a prime minister. "But I found that performances can vary, I do hope he will return to the ways of his father because his father contributed a lot to the development of our nation," said Dr Mahathir, in his press conference in Kuala Lumpur today. He was asked to comment on Najib's 40th year anniversary in politics, to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) today. Dr Mahathir over the past year had launched open criticism against Najib's administration, especially involving the controversy surrounding 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the RM2.6 billion donation in his private accounts. He had also accused Najib of undermining democracy through measures taken to suppress critics of the state investment fund. Outspoken Umno leaders, such as Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, and most recently, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir were either kicked out of their government posts or forced to resign after criticising the prime minister on the issue. Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali on January 26 said that investigators had found that no criminal offence linked to Najib following the probe into the donation money and SRC International Sdn Bhd. Tonight, Umno is expected to host special prayers and dinner in honour of Najib. The event, according to reports, will kick off with maghrib, isyak and solat hajat prayers at PWTC.
