Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad expressed scepticism that the new Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah will contribute to the success of the state, say news reports. The former prime minister said he felt the sudden removal of his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz, from the top post would also affect Ahmad Bashah's prospects to perform well in his duty. "I don't think so, because in the past he didn't contribute towards the success of Kedah," he said, when asked if Ahmad Bashah would bring success to Kedah. Mukhriz, who is Dr Mahathir's youngest son, was replaced after he lost the confidence of the majority of state assemblymen. Dr Mahathir also commented on Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, the Kedah menteri besar from 2005 to 2008, when Barisan Nasional (BN) lost the state to PAS. BN took back Kedah in the 2013 polls, and Mukhriz was made menteri besar. "When Mahdzir Khalid was MB and all, they lost. So how can you say they are successful but the new person who seems to have support of the people should be replaced?" he said. Dr Mahathir added that Ahmad Bashah was part of the team that governed Kedah prior to the 2008 defeat, saying that they had never lost the state before until the particular group took over. "We have never lost in Kedah before until these people took over. And now those people are back to run the state. Can we believe him to do a good job?" said Mahathir, the former prime minister. – February 16, 2016.]]>
