Industry players, Home Ministry discuss foreign worker levy

The Home Ministry met with industry players today to discuss the foreign worker levy and the exercise to re-employ illegal immigrants. According to those who attended the meeting with Home Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim, no major decision was reached and another round of meetings was planned for the end of the month. Malaysian Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry secretary-general Datuk Dr A.T. Kumararajah said industry players would be coming back for another meeting. "We will come back to find a workable solution," he said when met after the meeting. About 50 industry players attended the meeting at the Home Ministry. Kumararajah said the Home Ministry had been sympathetic to the needs of the industry. "The number of illegal workers who are presently in the country need to be identified before the government brings in new foreign workers.  "That way we can have the number of how many (more foreign workers) we actually need. The foreign worker issue is market driven. If they enter (the country) this means I need them," he said. SME Association of Malaysia president Michael Kang meanwhile said no major decision was made during the two-hour discussion. – Bernama, February 16, 2016.]]>
