Umno leaders concerned about Najib but afraid to speak up, says Muhyiddin

Several Umno leaders who were initially concerned about Datuk Seri Najib Razak alleged financial scandals were now the ones condemning those speaking against the party president, former deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said. Muhyiddin, whose Umno membership was suspended last night, said these leaders had urged him to do something about the allegations against Najib and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor. "They asked me to do something to correct the situation. They were worried Umno would be rejected by the people if Najib continued to lead the party," he wrote in a lengthy post on his Facebook page today. He said he urged these leaders to join him in advising the prime minister "collectively" but they were not "brave" enough to do so. "As the situation grew worse, I took on the responsibility of advising Najib, whether in private four-eyed meetings with him, in the Cabinet meeting, in Umno Supreme Council meetings, and then on the party platform in the open. "When I started speaking out, those leaders who came to me before started distancing themselves from me. "Today, they are the ones who are opposing me." He said Umno had lost its values to the point that leaders could no longer tell right from wrong. "The priority is not the original struggle of the party, but self interest. Umno will be destroyed and rejected by the people as a result of this." Muhyiddin was suspended as an Umno member last night at the party's Supreme Council meeting. The move capped a week in which several party leaders spoke against him and called for his removal over his consistent criticism of Najib over 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and the RM2.6 billion donation. He became estranged from Najib last year and was removed as deputy prime minister in a Cabinet reshuffle in July. He remained Umno deputy president until yesterday but at the party's general assembly in December, was blocked from speaking to delegates. – February 27, 2016.]]>
