5.7 quake strikes southwest Sumatra

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck southwest Sumatra this morning, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department. In a statement today, the department said the quake with its epicentre at 629 km southwest of Siberut, Indonesia, 1,140km southwest of Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan occurred at 8.10am. The department is monitoring developments in the aftermath of the earthquake and will post updates on the situation from time to time. However, there is no tsunami threat, the statement added. A 7.8 magnitude quake occurred off Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra, Indonesia at 7.58pm (8.58pm MYT) last night. Tremors were felt up to Padang in West Sumatra province, Medan and Aceh as well as several states in Malaysia. – Bernama, March 3, 2016.]]>
