Dr Mahathir’s resignation not shocking, says Najib

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's move to leave Umno was not shocking and should not distract the party, said Datuk Seri Najib Razak. According to national news agency Bernama, the prime minister told this to reporters after his speech at the Jeddah Economic Forum (JEF) 2016 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, last night. Dr Mahathir on Monday decided to quit the ruling Malay party over his feud with Najib. Speaking to the press in Putrajaya, Dr Mahathir said the party was no longer what it used to be. "The focus is how to keep Najib as prime minister. "Umno no longer is performing the task it set for itself way back in 1946," he said. This is the second time the former prime minister has quit Umno, the first time in May 2008, over unhappiness with Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi the then prime minister who had led Barisan Nasional to dismal results in the general election that year. Dr Mahathir said Umno was also dedicated to upholding the "wrong things" Najib had done. – March 2, 2016. MORE TO COME]]>
