PAS to stay away from Dr Mahathir’s anti-Najib campaign

PAS will not support Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his quest to remove Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from office. Its secretary-general Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the party was more comfortable playing the role of a "third political block" in changing the country's leadership. "PAS has decided not to be part if the programme because we have our own approach and movement, namely through the third block, changing the leadership through democratic and constitutional means," he said in a statement this evening. "PAS chooses to follow the suggestion of the Council of Rulers that a Royal Commission of Inquiry is formed to probe into the scandals involving 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), the RM2.6 billion 'political donation' and other current issues." He said PAS wanted Parliament to be dissolved immediately to make way for elections. Earlier today, Pakatan Harapan said it was not involved in an event tomorrow by Dr Mahathir to announce a joint declaration against Najib. The coalition's leaders instead called for a holistic reform of Malaysia's political system, and not just the removal of a prime minister. The Malaysian Insider today reported that Dr Mahathir was expected to lead a movement against Najib, following his meetings with politicians and activists. It was learnt that Dr Mahathir would lead some 40 leaders to sign a declaration tomorrow seeking to remove Najib as prime minister. The declaration will be symbolically presented to a people's representative, followed by a news conference. – March 3, 2016.]]>
