Releasing Anwar not part of anti-Najib movement, says Dr Mahathir

Releasing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is not on the agenda of the new movement driven by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to remove Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from office, the retired leader said today. "We are concerned above removing Najib," the former prime minister told reporters who asked if he would also support the campaign for Anwar's release, following the signing the "Citizens Declaration" that includes a call for Najib's removal as prime minister. Prominent human rights lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan had said during the press conference that releasing Anwar had to be part of the movement's declaration. The PKR de facto leader has been serving jail time since February last year after the Federal Court upheld his conviction for a second sodomy charge. He faced his first charge and was found guilty after being sacked as deputy prime minister by Dr Mahathir in 1998. Anwar and the opposition have claimed that the charges against him were a conspiracy to end his political career. – March 4, 2016. MORE TO COME]]>
