Malaysia No 20 in highest number of road accidents, says Liow

The country's road accident rate is serious as it is placed 20th among 160 countries with the highest number of road accidents, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai. He said speeding was the major contributing factor in road accidents in the country, even though there were various rules and regulations for road users implemented by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and police. Motorcyclists made up the largest number of fatalities, he said. "A total of 361,408 road accidents with 4,940 fatalities have been recorded this year. Of the total number of fatalities, 60% were motorcyclists," he said. Liow spoke to reporters after launching the "JOM JPJ" programme at the parking lot of Bentong Bus Terminal in Selangor today. Liow added that the ministry would ensure a higher quality of driving curriculum as well as ensure motorcyclists especially the young and elderly had their driving licences. – Bernama, November 14, 2015.]]>
