Dr Mahathir not fit to preach democracy, says Rais Yatim

Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim has rejected Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's claim that the Najib administration constituted death to democracy, saying the former prime minister should study his own track record. Rais, who is the socio-cultural adviser to Putrajaya, said Dr Mahathir's own policies were not democratic. "We have to compare with what Dr Mahathir had done before, that unreasonable things had happened before. "I don't want to open up that chapter because I don't want to humiliate anyone. In Islam, to humiliate a fellow, will end up with us being humiliated ourselves," he told reporters after launching a Global Home Coming programme at the International Islamic University in Gombak today. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak could also make similar claims against Dr Mahathir, such as the mass arrests known as Operasi Lalang in 1987. "It is too easy for one who is experienced to make such a claim. "Najib too can voice the view that during Operasi Lalang, actions by Dr Mahathir were out of hand," he said. – March 5, 2016.
