Dr Mahathir’s alignment with opposition a start of Umno disunity, says Sarawak DAP

Sarawak DAP today said cooperation between former Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and opposition leaders may spell the beginning of a break-up within Barisan Nasional (BN). Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen said the new development could also pave the way to a new alignment of the political landscape in Malaysia. "Many in BN are trying to belittle Dr Mahathir for signing the Citizens' Declaration with opposition leaders and called him a spent force in politics. But we know that the cooperation between him and the opposition will be the turning point of Umno's disunity." With that, he urged all 25 BN's Sarawak MPs to cut their ties with Umno, adding that they should not follow Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak blindly. He said it did not make sense that Sarawak BN was speaking against Umno in the state but at the same time support the party in leading the nation. "It does not make sense that the Chief Minister (Tan Sri Adenan Satem) wants to have clean and good governance but continued to be led by a scandal-plagued prime minister. "This is the time to make a difference and more importantly, this is the time to show all Malaysians that Sarawak can lead the change to save the country." BN Julau MP Joseph Salang Gandum however quashed Chong's "invitation" and told the Sarawak DAP leader to stop "dreaming" of persuading BN leaders. "Please wait for your turn. If you win then you can rule. "Do not think that we in Sarawak whom are in support of BN are being played. We are here because we were chosen by the people," Gandum said. He said Malaysia has its own constitution and urged Chong and the opposition not to try to topple the government at their whim and fancy. "Don't try to be a God and determine who is right or wrong." – March 8, 2016.]]>
